We recently appeared in a video created to capture the fantastic Challenge on Dementia 2020 conference held at UCL. Although I’m very pleased to have been a part of it, I was disappointed to hear the Outstanding Activities boxes referred to as ‘memory boxes’. People still automatically connect resources designed for use with people with dementia as being targeted at ‘memories’.
We design our boxes to build on the abilities and interests of people living and working in care. The boxes are about doing, trying something new and contributing. Certainly, we hear of residents sharing memories, inspired by something in one of our boxes. However, we don’t always need to be looking back. People don’t have to remember. We can accept people as they are. Let’s raise our expectations, not to only reminisce but to also to create enjoyable new experiences!
